Lovable vs Bolt.new
Both turn a prompt into a working web app in minutes. They make different bets about how much of the stack you control, and those bets decide how much work stands between you and real users.
Lovable
An opinionated full-stack builder: React on the front, Supabase behind it, hosted and edited in place.
What it leaves for productionBolt.new
A StackBlitz-based builder that runs Node in the browser, so the stack is more open and the code is closer to hand.
What it leaves for productionWhere they differ
| Lovable | Bolt.new | |
|---|---|---|
| Stack control | Low, and that is the point. You get its stack, which is why it is fast. | Higher. You can steer the framework and dependencies more freely. |
| Backend | Supabase, wired for you. Auth, database and storage exist from the first minute. | Your choice, which means you also have to wire and secure it. |
| Getting the code out | Possible, but the app assumes its hosting and its Supabase project. | Easier. It is closer to a normal repo you can run yourself. |
| Where it breaks first | Supabase policies written for a demo, and secrets that reach the browser. | A backend assembled fast, with auth checked in the UI instead of the data layer. |
| Best for | The fastest path to a working, data-backed app. | Wanting stack flexibility and to own the code sooner. |
Which to choose
Choose Lovable
Pick Lovable if you want the shortest route to a working app with auth and a database already connected, and you are comfortable on its stack.
Choose Bolt.new
Pick Bolt.new if you want more say over the stack and code you can move off the platform with less friction.
What both leave for production
Whichever you choose, the same class of work is left for launch: a service_role or admin key must never reach the browser, access has to be enforced in the database and not just the interface, and you need a path onto infrastructure you own. That is the part we do.
Common questions
Neither is secure or insecure by default; both let you ship an app whose access rules were written for a demo. The most common critical issue - a key in the browser bundle or row-level security left off - happens on both. Security is a function of what you do after the build, not which builder you picked.
Yes, and it is easier from Bolt.new because the code is closer to a normal repository. From Lovable the app assumes its own hosting and Supabase project, so the move is more involved but entirely doable. We do both.
